RackSpotter is a free, crowdsourced tool available for web browsers and smartphones that can be used to identify bike parking locations throughout the greater Washington DC region.
RackSpotter uses the community to inventory bicycle racks. Contributors login to the application, use the available map or their phone’s GPS to pinpoint a location, and can then place a bike rack on the map. Users then enter details, such as rack type and number of parking spots, and can even add a photo of the rack using their phone’s camera. Contributors can then add any specific comments or notes before submitting the location.
The locations are instantly compiled and added to the map and made available for search. When planning a trip or arriving at a location, cyclists can use RackSpotter to search an area for bike parking.
Planning professionals will be able to use this information to detail and inventory current bicycle parking. Bike racks are installed by various groups including local government, private developers and other groups, so maintain an accurate inventory is difficult. Using this tool, planners will be able to better identify bike parking need across the region.
RackSpotter will first be available in beta for Arlington County, but then will be opened up to the wider DC area.
Go to RackSpotter.com to start adding bike racks to the inventory. Mobile users will be automatically forwarded to the mobile web application.
Start by clicking the Login button
On the login screen click on the Create An Account button.
Registration and logging in are the same on RackSpotter. Go to the Login screen and click your social media tool of choice and login using the third-party tool’s system.
In case you have previously registered with a username and password, click the Forgot Password button to begin the process of resetting it.
You can specify the location of the rack by zooming in and clicking on the map until the exact location is found.
Scroll through the rack type selector and click the rack type that most closely matches the on you see.
Each rack type has a maximum number of spaces. Let the rack type selector be your guide in specifying how many spaces your rack has.
Are there any abandoned bikes or skeletons at this location? Typically these are bikes that are missing seats, wheels, or even handle bars for extended periods of time. Give us a count so that we can report it to the appropriate authorities.
Only landscape oriented photos will be accepted by the system.
Insert any additional information of interest regarding this bike rack.
Review the information and then save for the rack to be inserted.
Logged in users need click on the rack of choice, then click Comment On This Rack. Remember to save.
Unfortunately only the system administrator can change or remove data from the RackSpotter.
Lamp posts, sign posts, and telephone polls are not legitimate bike racks.
